Business segments

Initial set-up

The ‘Business segment’ tag can be applied to any object to help describe, classify and find it. The available values are set using an admin tool and this should be done when you first start using TRAC.

segment start

Click on ‘Edit’ and then the ‘click here’ link.

segment edit

The first step is to define the groups and their elements. In this example I am only using two groups - Division and Portfolio - but you can use up to four. Click the plus sign in the middle of the box to activate that group, then name it and define the valid elements.

segment groups

Once the groups are defined we need to build the hierarchy. This means defining the valid combinations of the group elements you just defined.

segment hierarchy

This example has only four combinations but you can create much more complex hierarchies. For example, if one of the levels was Region, then multiple combination of the other groups elements may be valid for every region.

Once you have built the hierarchy click save and confirm.

segment save

These business segments are now available as tags to assign to other objects, in the tenant.

Editing segments

You can edit the segment hierarchy at any point.

The first steps are the same as the initial set-up. Once you click ‘Edit’ you will see the page as it was the last time the segment definitions were saved.

segment edit

If you delete a group element, all the rows in the hierarchy containing that element will be deleted.

Note

This does not update objects that were already assigned to this business segment. The tag still exists, it just can’t be assigned anymore.

If you add an element to a group, it will appear in the drop-down. You can create new rows using that element.

segment edit

If you add a new group, you will have the option to assign elements from that group to all rows in the hierarchy. You may then want to add new rows to capture the new valid combinations.

segment edit

Once you click save, the new hierarchy will be available.

Note

If you add new groups or elements but don’t update the hierarchy the ‘Save’ option will not be available.
